Well this weekend marks the fourth Artscape Show and Sale. I can honestly say that I am really proud of being a member of the Almaguin Highlands Arts Council. Four years ago my friend Ingrid asked me to enter some items into the show. I didn’t think my stuff was on par with all the amazing talented artists in our area. You see I align myself with being a crafter not an artist and I wasn’t sure how my jewelry would showcase next to some very prominent painters, and potters in the show. I was nervous about how I would be perceived being in such a top-notch show. I am comfortable sitting at my booth in a Christmas Craft show but an Art show- yikes.

Fast forward to today and I am now on the board of directors for the Almaguin Highlands Arts Council and in my second year of being on the show committee. I was so grateful to the council for putting on the show that I wanted to give back. As an artist the show is awesome! You drop your stuff off, it is tastefully displayed, volunteers run the show and at the end of the weekend you come back pick up your items that haven’t sold and your money from the items that did. Talk about an awesome deal for the artists. So last year when I got the call to volunteer I said yes, I felt it was my turn to repay in kind for all the hard work other’s had put in for my benefit.

I am amazed with how our board members dedicate so much of their time every month to our meetings, preparing reports, researching grants, promoting the arts through ambassadorship, working on committees for our show, tours, directories and so much more. Several board members dedicate so much and do not make a profit off selling their items in any of our events. I became a board member because I felt that I owe it to these people and their hard work. It is simply my turn.

Last night the Gala was buzzing with so much energy and excitement. It was a packed house. I believe there are 47 artists in the show this year showcasing their work. Being in an area with so much creativity helps get the ideas flowing about new projects, despite the fact that most of the items are in different mediums then I use. The show helps push me to strive to be a better artist. This year I entered some new projects- nuno felted scarves. I wanted to expand my creative horizons and try something new. I am so grateful to my friend Ingrid for pushing me out of my comfort zone four years ago to become a member of our local arts council.
