My Messy Bun Hat Pattern (see below)
Just before Christmas my best friend Katherine posted a picture of a Messy Bun Hat on my Facebook timeline. Clearly she wanted me to make her one. She was the third person to post something about this hat to my timeline in a matter of days. So I went straight to Ravelry to look for a pattern. I didn’t find one to suit the bulky wool I had so I made one up. My Inspiration was the awesome Ponytail Hat by Bellsisterdebbie Designs. I think their messy bun hat pattern is the coolest one on Ravelry. I love the pattern; it reminds me of the Drop Stitch Cowl, which is one of my all time favourite items I have ever made. After I finished Katherine’s hat I started to make one using their pattern (my finished project is pictured above). It is for another friend’s birthday, hopefully she doesn’t see this before I give it to her. I think it turned out really well. I used Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Chunky in Bollywood. Even though it is a chunky wool, it knit easily on the needle size indicated in the pattern. It is a lot thinner than the bulky wool I used to make Katherine’s hat. I am making one for myself next. Isn’t that always the way. I am constantly working on gifts for others. I have a stash of wool for projects for me. I will get to them soon, very soon.
Katherine and I have been rocking the messy bun since High School, which was 25 years ago. It is still my go to hairdo. Heck even on my wedding day I wore my hair in my fancy version of a messy bun (using a hair clip instead of an elastic). Until now I have been taking my bun out to put on a toque. The alternative is wearing an ear warmer or neck tube instead to keep my hair up. I can’t believe I have never made one of these until now. All those years of messing with taking my hair out, putting it back up after I took my toque off, foolish me. Why didn’t I see these sooner? This is going to be life changing. lol.
